Harbour Life, Newlyn

Acrylic on Canvas Board, 60cm x 60cm

£950

This painting is a particular favourite. As a child we moved to Cornwall in 1984, we lived next door to the Tolcarne Inn, in what was then the Tolcarne Restaurant. We lived in the flat above the restaurant with the awesome panoramic views of Mounts Bay and Newlyn Harbour. Outside on the balcony to the right over the harbour you can see all the layering of houses all positioned to soak in the fantastic views. The Tolcarne Restaurant is no more, it is now two cottages, and the balconies both still exist. Revisiting one of them, I decided I was going to paint the view to the right from the balcony, and this is it. It was a challenge to include so much detail and to keep the feel sketchy and loose. The harbour is blurred, to portray a busy working environment. Its one of those paintngs where there is no ‘seascape’, but you can feel it’s just out of the composition.

This painting was exhibited at the Summerhouse Gallery in Marazion, as part of the ‘Newlyn Calling’ show in 2024. It is signed and titled on the reverse

Framed in a simple white tray frame, ready to hang.
